A 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook Mexico City and parts of the Guerrero state on Friday, according to the country’s seismological service.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was forced to evacuate the presidential palace during her regular morning press conference as the earthquake alert was sounded. She calmly evacuated alongside journalists, before returning minutes later.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said the earthquake struck the southern Mexican state of Guerrero at a depth of 10 km. Sheinbaum said there was no serious damage in Guerrero or the capital, Mexico City, after speaking with the state’s governor.
Sheinbaum explained that the earthquake’s epicenter was located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from San Marcos in Guerrero, roughly 230 kilometers away from Mexico City. However, the impact of the earthquake was felt in the capital city, leading to panic among citizens. The US Geological Survey confirmed that the quake hit at 1358 GMT, or 7:58 am (local time).
Several videos surfaced on social media showing people rushing out of buildings in Mexico City and Acapulco in panic when the shaking began. Several buildings were seen shaking due to the impact of the earthquake.
The centre of Mexico City is built on the muddy subsoil of what was once the bed of a lake, making it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. Those most strongly felt usually originate from Guerrero state on the Pacific coast.
On September 19, 1985, an 8.1 magnitude earthquake devastated a vast swathe of Mexico City, leaving nearly 13,000 dead, according to official figures.
