Eateries May Soon Need To Declare Veg, Non-Veg Dishes While Applying For Registration: Report

As per the report, restaurants would soon require to declare their menu and dishes when applying for or renewing their eatery's license.

Restaurants will soon have to declare their menu and dishes while applying for registration or renewal of license. In a step to make the food ecosystem more transparent, the government would reportedly ask non-vegetarian outlets to specify details like if they plan to sell beef or pork. Similarly, vegetarian restaurants will also be required to specify their menu.

As per a report by Livemint, this move is on the cards and the government might implement this in the coming months. An official told the media outlet on the condition of anonymity that this proposal was reviewed after a suggestion from the Uttar Pradesh government.

The report further adds that this measure is being taken to “respect cultural dietary practices while ensuring consumers have clear information about the food they are purchasing or eating at the restaurants."

Furthermore, if any vegetarian restaurant plans to switch to a non-vegetarian eatery, it will have to apply for the license first.

The report further mentions that the central advisory committee (CAC) of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recommended the changes at a meeting in Bhubaneshwar.

Livemint’s report cited another official as saying, “The FSSAI’s commitment is to ensure food safety and consumer empowerment. By clearly stating their food type on their licence and registration applications, businesses are providing customers with the necessary information to make informed choices that align with their personal beliefs and preferences."

State governments and union territories will be responsible to implement the new regulations whenever it comes into effect.
