The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday launched a sweeping crackdown against self-styled godman Ashok Kharat, carrying out multiple raids across Maharashtra in connection with a case involving alleged sexual exploitation, extortion, and financial fraud.

Search operations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) are underway at 11 locations linked to Kharat and his associates, spanning Nashik (5), Pune (3) and Shirdi (3), including residential and commercial properties, as well as cooperative credit societies suspected to have been used to channel illicit funds.

Kharat, a former merchant navy officer who styled himself as a spiritual healer, is accused of preying on women followers through manipulation, coercion, and false claims of divine powers.

As per investigators, he allegedly drugged and hypnotised victims before sexually assaulting them, with one complaint detailing repeated rape over a three-year period.

He also faces allegations of assaulting a pregnant woman and forcing her to terminate the pregnancy, along with accusations linked to murder.

According to preliminary findings, Kharat is believed to have operated a network of benami bank accounts in the names of third parties, while retaining control as nominee using linked mobile numbers.

Authorities allege he amassed large sums by selling ordinary items as “blessed” objects with supposed healing powers, and through extortion.

The proceeds were then allegedly funneled into land investments via his chartered accountant, Prakash Pophale, and close family members.

The case, registered by Nashik Police, has continued to widen, with multiple women coming forward to accuse Kharat of abuse under the guise of religious rituals.

Officials have said the number of complainants is expected to rise as the investigation deepens.
