Eight persons were arrested by Kalasapakkam police near Polur town in Tiruvannamalai on Wednesday for killing a local Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) functionary.
Police said the arrested persons were identified as K. Suman (30), V. Karuna (28), B. Mohan (23), G. Manikandan (27), P. Gopi (29), S. Parthiban (35), K. Sankar (28) and C. Vicky (22). They are residents of Tiruvannamalai.
Initial inquiry revealed that the deceased, S. Kamaraj, was a VCK functionary and an advocate in Sora Kolathur village near Kalasapakkam town. He was involved in social and welfare activities in the village.
Police said the main suspect Suman, who runs a tea shop in the village, had frequent quarrels with the deceased in fetching water from a public tap to run his tea shop. As Suman did not heed to his warning in taking water from public taps, as many residents were unable to fetch a few pots of water, Kamaraj complained to the local police about it.
Angered over it, police said Suman and his close associates intercepted Kamaraj and his friend B. Raja (43) near Naidumangalam railway level crossing near the village and allegedly hacked Kamaraj to death on Tuesday. Raja too sustained injuries.
As the duo cried for help, other motorists and residents rescued them and admitted them to Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai town where doctors referred Kamaraj to Vellore Government Hospital.
However, police said Kamaraj died on the way to hospital. A case was registered. Special teams nabbed the suspects from their hideout in the village after analysing CCTV footage near the railway level crossing and in the area. Arrested persons were lodged at Central prison in Vellore. A probe is underway.
