A 60-year-old man from Gujarat’s Gondal was murdered by his wife’s five brothers while attempting to reconcile with her family in Amreli district on Tuesday evening, The Times of India reported.
The deceased, identified as Dinesh Solanki, sustained grievous injuries after his legs were chopped off with an axe during the assault.
He was first taken to Amreli Civil Hospital and later shifted to Rajkot Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.
According to the report, Solanki had been married to Ratan for 35 years and was the father of three sons. A month ago, he reportedly left home following a dispute with his wife.
On Tuesday, he visited his niece Manisha’s home in Arjansukh village of Vadiya taluka in an effort to resolve the differences with his in-laws.
As per the FIR lodged by Manisha, two of Solanki’s brothers-in-law, Kanji Savaliya and Haku Savaliya, arrived at nearly 6.30 pm to mediate.
When Manisha’s husband stepped out to buy refreshments, the discussion turned hostile. Haku allegedly called the others, Nanu, Bagha, Jadav, and three unidentified men, to the scene.
Bagha was armed with a metal pipe, while Jadav carried an axe.
The report stated that the group barged into the house, where Bagha allegedly struck Solanki on the head, causing him to collapse.
While Kanji and Haku kept watch outside, the others held Solanki down as Jadav and the unidentified assailants hacked off his legs.
Manisha, who screamed for help, was pushed out of the house as the attackers fled in a waiting vehicle.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Chirag Desai was quoted as saying that Solanki had been living away from his wife due to a month-long dispute and had come to the village to discuss reconciliation.
“During the discussion, his five brothers-in-law hit him with a metal pipe on the head and inflicted fatal wounds on his legs," he said, adding that a forensic team has been deployed and a search for the accused is underway.
The police in Gujarat’s Vadiya village have registered a case under Section 103(1) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Kanji, Haku, Nanu, Bagha, Jadav, and three unidentified men.
Investigators suspect the killing was linked to the ongoing marital dispute.
