Elderly woman dies in house fire at Chinchinim

Margao: A 70-year-old woman died after being trapped in a house fire at Chinchinim on Monday night.The deceased, identified as Sumati Naik, was staying with her 75-year-old brother in a rented tin-shed house when the blaze broke out.

The structure was rapidly engulfed in flames, leaving her with severe burns.

She died on the spot.Neighbours who noticed the fire immediately attempted to douse the flames with water before alerting the Cuncolim fire brigade. Fire brigade personnel fought the raging flames and brought it under control. The cause of the fire is not yet determined.Sources said Naik earned her livelihood by selling candles and flowers at feasts and church prayer services.
