Election squad seizes 1,650 metres of banned plastic flex materials in Kochi

The District Election Enforcement Squad has seized 1,650 metres of banned plastic flex materials from various printing presses within the Kalamassery municipality limits. The materials were confiscated during surprise raids conducted by the squad as it had intensified inspections across the district to ensure strict compliance with the green protocol during the Assembly elections. A fine of ₹40,000 was imposed on the establishments.

The action followed the guidelines issued by the Election Commission, permitting only eco-friendly materials for campaign. The authorities found that banned PVC-based flex materials were being widely printed in violation of norms. The seized materials were handed over to the municipality.

Only natural materials such as cotton cloth and paper are allowed for campaign boards and banners. Reusable polyethylene may be used, provided it carries a recycle logo, certification from the Pollution Control Board, and details of the printing establishment. Flex materials with PVC coating and polyester fabrics are completely prohibited.

The enforcement squad said inspections would be intensified across all constituencies in the coming days. Strict legal action will be taken against printing presses found violating the norms, an official release said.

Green protocol

The district administration has, meanwhile, decided to strictly enforce green protocol norms across the district during the polls.

The directions were issued at a meeting of tahsildars, returning officers and green protocol nodal officers chaired by District Collector G. Priyanka.

Single-use plastics and disposable items have been completely banned at polling stations, voter facilitation centres, training centres, and distribution and collection centres.

Only reusable and eco-friendly materials will be permitted in place of plastic cups, plates, banners and similar items. Separate bins will be installed at all centres for the segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Non-biodegradable waste collected will be stored in bags provided by the Clean Kerala Company and shifted to material collection facilities. Haritha Karma Sena members will be deployed to prevent accumulation of waste.

Local self-government institutions have been directed to immediately remove plastic buntings, banners and boards installed in public places in violation of green protocol norms. The cost of removal will be recovered from the respective political parties or individuals responsible.

Nodal officers have been assigned at each centre to ensure compliance with the green protocol. The quantity of waste generated has to be recorded daily, and action will be recommended against officials violating norms.
