Iran’s military threatened retaliation against Israel after Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed four people, escalating tensions despite a recently proposed US-Iran agreement aimed at ending hostilities across West Asia, including in Lebanon.
In a strongly worded statement, Iran’s central military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, accused Israel of repeatedly violating the ceasefire and warned that continued attacks could provoke a military response from Tehran.
“If the child-killing army of the Zionist regime does not put an end to its acts of aggression in southern Lebanon, it should await a harsh response from the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran," the statement said as per AFP. The Iranian military further alleged that Israel had violated the Lebanon ceasefire “84 times" since the agreement was announced.
The threat comes as a fragile diplomatic breakthrough between Washington and Tehran faces its first major test. The United States and Iran recently reached an initial agreement designed to extend a shaky ceasefire and pave the way for broader efforts to end the regional conflict. The deal is also expected to facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.
However, disagreements over Israel’s military operations in Lebanon remain one of the biggest obstacles to a lasting settlement. Israel said its latest strikes targeted Hezbollah-linked sites in southern Lebanon. Israeli officials maintained that military operations will continue as long as they consider threats from Hezbollah to persist.
The attacks have also exposed growing tensions between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Speaking at the G7 Summit in France this week, Trump publicly criticized Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, warning that they could undermine diplomatic efforts with Iran.
“I’ve had a great relationship with Bibi, but now Bibi has to be more responsible with respect to Lebanon," Trump said.
According to reports, Trump was particularly angered by Israeli strikes on Beirut that occurred shortly before a planned US-Iran agreement was expected to be finalized. He later told Axios that he was “pissed off" by the timing of the attack and questioned Netanyahu’s judgment.
The dispute marks a notable shift in tone from Trump, who has long been one of Israel’s strongest international supporters. At the G7 summit, the US President also stressed the importance of preserving the emerging peace process.
Meanwhile, Iran has continued to insist that any comprehensive agreement must address Israel’s military presence in Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has argued that the conflict cannot be considered fully resolved while Israeli forces remain in territories captured during the war.
