The Department of Civil Engineering at Maharaja Institute of Technology (MIT) Mysore, in collaboration with SAI CAD Institute, Bengaluru, is preparing to set a unique record on Engineers’ Day, celebrated every year on September 15.

As a tribute to Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya on his 164th birth anniversary, a massive portrait measuring 80 m by 100 m (totaling 8,000 sq. m or 86,111 sq. ft) will be created at the sports grounds of MIT Mysuru.

“The initiative serves as a fitting homage to Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the legendary engineer and visionary administrator of the erstwhile Mysore Princely State,” the college said.

The project is being executed with active participation from Civil Engineering students and faculty, supported by volunteers from SAI CAD Institute. The portrait will be created using materials, including manufactured sand (M-Sand), 40 mm down-graded coarse aggregates, nylon thread, harmless colors, and soil, underscoring the emphasis on eco-friendly practices. The use of these materials showcases not only technical innovation but also lays emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility, a release said.

The initiative will be guided by the leadership of B.G. Nareshkumar, president, MET [R], Murali S., principal, MIT Mysore and founder president, MET [R], C. Ramakrishnegowda, professor and head of Civil Engineering Department, andM. Manjunatha Reddy, proprietor, SAI CAD Institute.

Several distinguished personalities are expected to grace the event, along with faculty and students from other institutions and the general public.

The initiative not only pays tribute to the visionary Sir M. Visvesvaraya but also provides a global platform for budding engineers to display their technical skills, creativity, teamwork and dedication to sustainable engineering practices.
