State government has directed the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) to implement top-tier lighting systems at Barabati Stadium
Bhubaneswar: Following Monday’s blast near Red Fort in New Delhi, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi has called for “zero error” security arrangements ahead of the T20 match between India and South Africa, scheduled for Dec 9 at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.Chairing a high-level preparatory meeting on Wednesday, Majhi instructed police and administrative officers to ensure foolproof safety measures for both spectators and players. “Given the recent blast in Delhi, public safety must be prioritised. Police must remain extra vigilant and ensure that no stone is left unturned for a smooth match,” the CM said.To prevent any technical disruptions, state govt has directed the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) to implement top-tier lighting systems at the stadium.
The move follows criticism over a 35-minute delay during the India-England ODI on Feb 9, when floodlight failure halted play after 6.1 overs of India’s reply.OCA secretary Sanjay Behera assured that additional generators will be deployed to maintain uninterrupted lighting. “We are introducing new monitoring software. If one generator fails, a backup will activate instantly to ensure continuous illumination,” Behera said.
Recognising cricket’s immense popularity, CM Majhi underscored the global attention the match will generate. “The entire nation and the world will be watching. All authorities must maintain heightened vigilance,” he said. The CM also highlighted Odisha’s reputation for successfully hosting international sporting events. “Barabati Stadium has a proven track record of well-managed matches. This event must reflect Odisha’s excellence and uphold the state’s image,” read a statement from the CMO.Majhi further directed officials to establish a green corridor to facilitate smooth and emergency medical evacuations and ensure seamless execution of all match-related operations, including crowd control, ticketing, traffic management and healthcare services.OCA was cautioned against overselling tickets beyond the stadium’s 45,000-seat capacity. The OCA functionaries presented detailed plans covering ticket distribution, fire safety, parking logistics and traffic management. “We will comply with the govt’s instructions. More meetings will be held with the commissionerate police for better coordination and execution of plans,” Behera said.
