Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police, Vakul Jindal has directed all officials including DSPs, Circle Inspectors, and sub-Inspectors to complete investigations in criminal cases in a time-bound manner and gather strong evidences to win cases in the court of law.
According to him, in cases where the accused might be imprisoned for 10 years, the investigation should be completed within 90 days, and in cases involving up to five years imprisonment the inquiry needs to be finished within 60 days.
Speaking to The Hindu, he said that time-bound investigation helps in quickly securing evidence and witnesses, thereby strengthening prosecution and ensuring justice for victims. . He added that in cases filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), officials have to collect the age proof certificates of victims without delay.
Mr. Jindal said: “We have been analysing the reasons for pending cases in our monthly crime review meetings. Officers have been asked to visit courts regularly to understand the legal procedures, interact with senior advocates, understand the clauses of all important Acts, and improve their drafting skills to present cases in a foolproof manner. Cases won will ensure justice to the victims especially for cases related to atrocities, POCSO Act, road accidents and others.”
He also stressed the importance of giving crime prevention top priority in the district and asked all officials to install CCTVs in sensitive areas, accident prone areas, important junctions and places of worship in all districts. He added that the CCTV footage would enable Station House Officers (SHOs) to prove cases easily and ensure punishment of offenders, especially in road accidents.
