On Thursday, the Pittsburgh Pirates officially established their direction in Minor League in 2026, with a redefined coaching hierarchy that included changes of leadership at various levels.
The most detailed is the most remarkable action at Triple-A, where Eric Patterson is finally promoted after a good 2025 year. The announcement, which took place in Bradenton, is an indication of organizational continuity coupled with new voices, with the Pirates concentrating on player development over the long-term. Having hired and assigned new managers to three affiliates and various coaching upgrades, the farm system of Pittsburgh has a new direction and momentum into 2026.
Eric Patterson takes over at Triple-A Indianapolis
Eric Patterson is a manager of the Indianapolis Indians who worked as the bench coach of this team in the 2025 season. Patterson fills the vacancy created by Shawn Bowman, who has ascended to the position of field coordinator of the Pirates in the Major League. The fact that he is being promoted shows that the organisation believes that he is able to take care of both the in-game strategy and player development on the highest level in minor leagues.
He will head a coaching team that has a number of new members. JD Closser comes to the club as catching and game-planning coach, and Casey Harms enters as hitting coach. Nasusel Cabrera successively replaced Cibney Bello as the pitching coach at the Pirates after the team hired Bello as the Major League pitching coach after Thomas Whitsett left the team on February 13.
It is also relevant that continuity matters. As the new faces join the team, Drew Benes will return as pitching coach alongside Eric Munson returning as hitting coach which will change towards the new team but will leave it stable over time as the team prepares to play Indianapolis in 2026.
New skippers named across Double-A, High-A, and Single-A
The Pirates extended the continuity of leadership and promotions to the rest of their system besides Triple-A. Andy Fox will come back to manage the Double-A Altoona Curve for a second season after a successful 2025 season that earned the team an appearance at the workstations. Justin Orton rose through the Single-A Bradenton to become the new hitting coach of Altoona.High-A Greensboro will have a new manager in Jose Mosquera, who is a long-time organisational member of the Pirates and joined the organisation in 2016 as a scout.
Mosquera has a large international experience, including prior management of Pirates teams in the Dominican Summer League and Florida Complex League. He will also be overseeing Team Colombia at the World Baseball Classic next month with an opening match against the Pirates on March 3.Its single-A Bradenton is headed by Gera Alvarez, who was previously the manager of the same club in the years 2017-2018. Alvarez, who has been a member of the Pirates organisation since 2011, will collaborate with new hitting coaches Ryan Powers and Jon Prieto, and pitching coach Matt Ford, who makes a third appearance.
