Two persons succumbed to dengue fever in Ernakulam over the past three weeks.
The district has recorded a total of over 670 suspected and confirmed cases since July 15, 2025. Those who succumbed to the disease include a 67-year-old man from Cheranelloor and a 56-year-old man from Nellikuzhi, according to the Health department statistics. The first case of death owing to dengue fever was reported on July 18 and the second case on August 4.
A majority of the cases were reported from regions that include Kothamangalam, Kumarapuram, Malayidamthuruth, Maneed, Piravom, Choornikkara, Karumaloor, Keezhmad, Perumbavoor, Vengoor, Chengamanad, Koovappady, Neudmbassery, Angamaly, Chittattukara, Chowara, Ezhikkara, Malayatoor, Okkal, and Kalamassery. The data showed that cases were also reported from Kakkanad, Kadavanthra, Thripunithura, Ponnurunni, Thrikkakara, Thammanam, and Fort Kochi.
The highest number over the past three weeks was reported on July 23 (a total of 69 suspected and confirmed cases). On July 23, as many as 10 cases were reported in Keezhmad. Okkal had three cases, followed by Chittattukara and Maneed with two cases each. Ernakulam has recorded an average of around 24 dengue cases (both confirmed and suspected) since July 15.
Meanwhile, T.K. Ashraf, chairperson of the Kochi Corporation’s health standing committee, said that the number of cases within the civic body limits had gone down compared to figures at the start of the monsoon season. However, control measures, including fogging, are being taken in various divisions as per schedule, he added.
The Health authorities cited the collection of stagnant water in refrigerator trays, indoor potted plants, and plastic sheets as one of the main reasons for vector breeding.
Sathi Lalu, chairperson of the Keezhmad grama panchayat, said that remedial measures were in place to check the spike in cases. They included regular fogging, especially in areas that had reported an increase in confirmed cases and source-reduction measures, she added.
