DEHRADUN: Former mandal president of BJP, Rohit Negi, was shot dead past midnight on Tuesday in Dehradun's Premnagar area while he was returning home with his friends after having dinner in the neighbourhood.
The assailants were waiting at a crossing and opened fire as they saw his car.Negi and the main accused had a quarrel on phone allegedly over one of his friend's relation with a girl from another community. Police said Negi and six of his friends had gone to another friend's house for dinner in two cars. He was driving when he was shot by accused Azhar Tyagi from Muzaffarnagar and his unidentified acquaintance.A case was filed against the two on a complaint by Negi's friend Abhishek Bartwal, who was in the front passenger seat.
Bartwal said, "We were at our friend's house when a female friend received a call from Tyagi. She put the call on speaker and Tyagi could be heard hurling abuses at her and Negi, who then told Tyagi not to abuse her. Soon there was a heated argument between the two and Tyagi disconnected the call.""Around 1.30 am on Tuesday when we were returning home, Tyagi and an unidentified acquaintance on a motorbike were seen lying in wait near a crossing. Seeing our car, Tyagi took out a gun and fired at our vehicle and sped away. A bullet hit Negi's neck and we rushed him to a hospital where he was declared brought dead," said Bartwal in his complaint.Dehradun SP (city) Pramod Kumar said, "A case was registered against Tyagi and another unidentified accused under relevant sections of BNS. We are examining CCTV camera footage, and the accused would be nabbed soon," said Kumar.
