Experts discuss US tariff, call for stronger diplomacy

Patna: Terming imposition of tariff by the USA as ‘an attack on India’s sovereignty’, vice-chancellor of Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), Kameshwar Nath Singh, suggested counter action.Delivering his presidential address at a panel discussion on “Punitive tariff on Indian export by USA: challenges and way out”, organised jointly by the departments of commerce and business studies, economic studies and policy and political studies of CUSB on Saturday, the VC maintained that India’s self-reliance, economic development and innovative culture are the real deterrents of the tariff war imposed by the USA.At the outset, economic studies and policy department head Krishnan Chalil highlighted the backdrop of the tariff blow imposed on India by the Trump administration and its possible implications on the Indian economy. He also suggested some solutions for meeting the challenges due to enhanced tariffs.Political studies department head, Pranav Kumar, outlined the details of the economic diplomacy behind the tariff war waged by the USA and suggested that diplomatic channels should promote India’s self-interest.

At the same time, he expressed concern over the diminishing power of global institutions like WTO under the hegemony of the USA and its allies in the present world order.Commerce department head Brajesh Kumar underlined the fact that the recent action by the USA was governed more by geo-political considerations rather than any economic rationality.Other prominent panelists who participated in the discussion included senior faculty members Pawas Kumar, Rikil Chyrmang, Sanjay Kumar, Firdaus Fatima Rizwi and Atish Kumar Das.
