What is Perplexity Computer and how does it work

Perplexity has unveiled 'Computer,' an AI tool for Max subscribers that performs complex, multi-step tasks autonomously. It leverages 19 diverse AI models for specialized functions, orchestrating them to deliver finished products without constant user oversight. Operating securely in the cloud, Computer integrates with popular business tools, offering a powerful new way to automate work.

Perplexity has launched Computer, a new AI tool that doesn't just answer your questions—it actually does your work. Available to Perplexity Max subscribers ($200/month), Computer is essentially a digital worker that can handle complex, multi-step tasks on its own, running for hours or even months in the background.Think of it this way: instead of asking an AI chatbot to help you draft an email, you tell Computer to "research our top five competitors, compare their pricing, build a slide deck, and email it to the team." It breaks that down into subtasks, assigns each one to the best AI model available, and delivers the finished product—without you hovering over it.

Perplexity's AI tool doesn't rely on just one AI model, it juggles 19

The biggest differentiator here is Computer's multi-model approach.

Rather than running everything through a single AI, it orchestrates 19 different models on the backend. Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 handles the core reasoning and coding. Google's Gemini takes over for deep research. Nano Banana generates images, Veo 3.1 does video, xAI's Grok handles quick lightweight tasks, and OpenAI's ChatGPT 5.2 is deployed for long-context recall and broad web searches."When you build a team, you don't build a homogenous group where everyone has the same skills," Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas told Fortune.

"The orchestration is the product. The model is a tool."This model-agnostic design means the lineup isn't fixed either. As newer, better models emerge, Perplexity can swap them in. Users also get the option to manually assign specific models to specific subtasks if they prefer more control.

Perplexity Computer is cloud-first, not on your laptop

Unlike OpenClaw—the viral open-source AI agent that runs locally on your machine with deep access to files and settings—Computer operates entirely in the cloud.

Every task runs inside an isolated sandbox environment with access to a real filesystem, browser, and tool integrations, but without touching your personal device.Perplexity has been blunt about why. Srinivas compared local-access agents like OpenClaw to malware, pointing to incidents where users lost control of what the agent was doing on their machines. Computer's cloud-based approach is designed to contain any errors or security failures within its sandbox, keeping them away from your primary network.

What can Perplexity Computer actually do

Computer connects with tools like Gmail, Outlook, GitHub, Slack, Notion, Salesforce, and more. It can monitor your email, calendar, and files with condition-based triggers, run scheduled jobs, and handle proactive tasks like morning briefings or deadline reminders.Max subscribers get 10,000 credits per month (with a limited-time bonus of 20,000 additional credits), and regular Perplexity searches remain unlimited. If credits run out mid-task, work pauses—not cancels—and resumes once credits are topped up.Computer is currently available on web desktop only, with a broader rollout to Pro and Enterprise users planned in the coming weeks.
