Multiple explosions at a fireworks storage facility in Esparto, a rural community in Yolo County, California, triggered a massive fire on Tuesday evening, prompting road closures and evacuation orders under emergency response, said officials.
The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office stated that the incident occurred near County Roads 23 and 86A, where a structure housing fireworks caught fire following a series of explosions.
Several buildings on the property were engulfed in flames, which also spread to surrounding vegetation, igniting multiple grass fires. As of Tuesday night, the combined burn area was estimated to be around 80 acres.

The first explosion was reported around 5:50 pm (local time), according to the Esparto Fire Protection District.
Authorities issued evacuation orders for a one-mile area south of Highway 16, stretching to County Road 23 and westward from Interstate 505 to County Road 85B.
Authorities also closed roads leading to the affected area for public safety, said officials.
At a press briefing, fire officials said efforts were ongoing to contain the spread. Cal Fire LNU confirmed that additional crews had been dispatched to assist with firefighting operations.
Residents in the area reported feeling their homes shake and hearing loud blasts at intervals. “It felt like an earthquake," some told CBS News, adding that windows rattled from the force of at least two major explosions.
Some community members said they had loved ones who might have been inside the warehouse at the time, though they had not been able to establish contact.
When asked about possible injuries or fatalities, law enforcement officials declined to provide details, citing the ongoing investigation.
CBS News San Francisco’s aerial footage showed flames and smoke rising from the facility. The plume of smoke reached altitudes between 10,000 and 15,000 feet, according to the CBS Sacramento First Alert Weather Team.
Esparto is located about 14 miles west of Woodland and approximately 35 miles northwest of Sacramento. Yolo County borders the west side of Sacramento County.
