Soon, every passenger coach in Indian Railways will have four CCTV cameras while locomotives will have six such monitoring units, the Ministry announced on Sunday.
The statement said that cameras were installed on an experimental basis in loco engines and coaches of the Northern Railway and the results were positive.
“Based on the positive outcome of experimental installation of CCTV cameras in passenger coaches, Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras in all coaches. This move will significantly improve passenger safety. Miscreants and organised gangs take advantage of gullible passengers. With cameras, such incidents will significantly reduce," the Ministry added.
The Union Minister for Railways has given the go-ahead to install CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locos, the Ministry explained.
To preserve privacy of passengers, CCTV cameras will be installed in the common movement area near the doors.
A Ministry official also explained that it will help ensure safety of women even on long-distance trains.
“Women traveling alone or with other passengers sometimes do not feel safe. The cameras will ensure that monitoring will be done online all the time," the official told News18.
Each railway coach will be covered with four dome-type CCTV cameras — two in each entranceway — and each locomotive will have six CCTV cameras. This will include one camera each at the front, rear and on both sides of the locomotive. Each cab (front and rear) of a loco will be fitted with one dome CCTV camera and two desk-mounted microphones.
The officials shared that the CCTV cameras will have the latest specifications and will be STQC-certified. The Union Minister for Railways emphasised on deploying the best-in-class equipment, the Ministry explained.
The Railways will have high-quality footage even for trains running at 100-kmph-plus speeds and also under low lighting conditions.
“The Union Minister for Railways encouraged the officials to explore the use of AI on the data captured by CCTV cameras, in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission," the Ministry added.
So far, there was no provision for cameras in the trains. Only Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat and Vande Metros were equipped with CCTVs.
