A 24-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her in-laws and buried in a pit outside their house in Faridabad’s Roshan Nagar area, police said on Friday.
The woman, identified as Tanu Singh, had been missing since April and was found dead earlier this week following an investigation.
Tanu had married Arun Singh, a resident of Roshan Nagar, two years ago, with her family alleging that she faced regular harassment over dowry since the marriage.
Police said that on April 23, a 10-foot-deep pit was dug in front of the Singh family’s home.
According to neighbours, the family had claimed it was for drainage work and later covered it with plastic sheets.
Two days later, on April 25, Tanu’s father-in-law, Bhoop Singh, filed a missing person report at Palla police station, saying she had gone to the market and not returned.
He went so far as to label her mentally disturbed in an attempt to downplay the crime as merely a missing person case.
During the investigation, police found inconsistencies in the family’s statements.
On further questioning, Bhoop Singh allegedly confessed to killing Tanu on the night of April 21 and burying her in the pit.
Her body was recovered from the site and identified by her clothes.
“We are currently investigating the possible roles of other family members. The motive appears to be dowry-related, but further inquiries are ongoing," said ACP Rajesh Kumar Lochan.
An FIR has been registered against Bhoop Singh, his wife Sonia, son Arun, and daughter Kajal under charges of murder and relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Bhoop and Arun are in custody, while Sonia and Kajal are absconding, said officials.
Tanu’s family claimed she was harassed soon after marriage. “Tanu came back to live with us at our maternal home just months after the wedding because she was not being treated well… When we finally sent her back, the torture resumed. They wouldn’t let her speak to us, not even on phone calls," said her sister, Preeti.
Police are continuing the investigation and have not ruled out more arrests.
