Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) announced that Fazil Nagar town will be renamed Pawagarh in honour of Jain Tirthankar Lord Mahavir.

Mr. Adityanath said this while at a government function in Fazil Nagar, where 278 development projects worth over ₹424 crore were dedicated. Certificates, sanction letters, and cheques were also distributed to beneficiaries of various government welfare schemes.

"We have approved the proposal to rename Fazil Nagar. It will no longer be known as Fazil Nagar; instead, it will gain a new identity as Pawagarh. It will be named after Lord Mahavir. Why should we call it Fazil?" Mr. Adityanath said. He said that along with Bhagwan Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankar, the name of Pawagarh will also gain prominence.

"By connecting with the rich traditions and cultural heritage of Pawagarh, people from across the country and around the world will be drawn to this sacred place," he added. A proposal for the renaming was earlier sent to the Chief Minister's Office by the local administration.

The proposed name, Pawagarh, is derived from Pawapuri in Bihar, a revered Jain pilgrimage site closely associated with Lord Mahavir. He said every citizen should feel proud of their heritage. "How can one feel grateful to their ancestors, who know more than the followers of Sanatan Dharma," he said.
