FBI Director Kash Patel and his deputy, Dan Bongino, are both reportedly considering resigning over internal tensions related to the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, according to reports.
The possible resignations come after a heated meeting earlier this week between top officials, including Patel, Bongino, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. At the centre of the dispute is a recently released memo that dismisses the long-standing rumours about Epstein’s “client list" and the circumstances of his 2019 death.
According to CNN, Bongino was questioned over a news report suggesting that the FBI wanted to release more information about the Epstein investigation but was blocked by the US Justice Department. Bongino denied leaking the information but did not publicly support a statement defending the department’s internal review.
The New York Post reports that Bongino is seriously considering stepping down, just four months into the role. A source familiar with the situation said the relationship between Bongino and Bondi has broken down beyond repair. “I don’t think Dan comes back if Pam stays," the source said.
Now, there are signs that Patel may follow him out. A US Justice Department official told The New York Post that Patel and Bongino have always shared a commitment to transparency. “In a world where that’s being stifled, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them stand up for that," the official said.
The controversy follows the release of a memo from Bondi’s office stating that Epstein died by suicide and that there was no evidence he kept a “client list" or blackmailed powerful individuals. This contradicted theories long held by some in Trump’s base, who believed in a wider cover-up involving elites in politics and entertainment.
Bondi later clarified comments she made earlier this year, saying that when she referred to a “client list" on Fox News, she meant the broader Epstein case file, not a literal list of names. She also addressed the missing surveillance footage from Epstein’s jail cell, blaming outdated video systems.
While White House officials have denied any division, the fallout has raised concerns about unity within the Justice Department. Bongino’s absence from work on Friday added to speculation that he might have already quit, though no official announcement has been made.
A White House spokesperson told The New York Post that US President Donald Trump’s justice team remains focused on delivering results and dismissed the reports of discord as distractions from their goals.
