FIFA is exploring another financial boost for the 2026 World Cup, with discussions underway to increase prize money for all 48 participating teams.
The proposal is set to be reviewed at Tuesday’s FIFA Council meeting, held ahead of the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver.
The 2026 edition, co-hosted by United States, Mexico and Canada, will already mark a major shift, expanding from 32 to 48 teams.
Back in December, FIFA confirmed a record $655 million prize pool, a 50% increase from the previous World Cup. That figure itself followed a $727 million financial commitment to the tournament.
Now, that number could rise further.
“FIFA can confirm it is in discussions with associations around the world to increase available revenues," a spokesperson said.
“This includes a proposed increase of financial contributions to all qualified teams for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and of development funding available to all 211 member associations."
Record Revenues Driving Growth
The push comes as FIFA expects to generate more than $11 billion in revenue during the 2023–2026 cycle, the highest in its history.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be groundbreaking in terms of its financial contribution to the global football community," the spokesperson added, pointing to the organisation’s strong financial position and its FIFA Forward development programme.
FIFA’s 2025 annual report also revealed that 93% of its projected revenue had already been secured by the end of that year, largely driven by the success of the expanded Club World Cup held in the United States.
How the Prize Money Breaks Down
Under the current structure announced in December:
- Winners are set to earn $50 million
- Runners-up will receive $33 million
- Teams eliminated in the group stage will take home $9 million
- Each qualified nation also receives $1.5 million in preparation funding
A revised model could increase payouts across all tiers, not just for the top finishers.
The decision now rests with the FIFA Council. If approved, it would further raise the financial stakes of an already expanded tournament.
The 2026 World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19.
