The 2026 FIFA World Cup has found its one of the breakout stars. And he is a teenager from Ivory Coast who learned football in Florida.Yan Diomande capped a sensational group stage with another electric display as Ivory Coast beat Curaçao 2-0 at Philadelphia Stadium on Friday to advance to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
But beyond the result, it was the 19-year-old's staggering individual numbers that got the attention of the world.
Diomande became the only player this century to create 10 or more chances and complete 10 or more dribbles across his first three FIFA World Cup appearances. To find the last player to achieve the same feat, you have to go all the way back to 1990 - when both Roberto Donadoni and Dragan Stojkovic did so at that summer's tournament in Italy.
That is how rare this is.And the team stats behind him are equally jaw-dropping. Ivory Coast have completed 43 dribbles as a team across the entire group stage, more than any team managed in the whole group stage at either the 2022 or 2018 editions of the World Cup. A large chunk of those belong to Diomande.Born in Abidjan on November 14, 2006, Diomande moved to the United States at the age of 15, joining DME Academy in Florida before eventually earning a move to Spanish side Leganés and then RB Leipzig.
In his debut Bundesliga season in 2025-26, he scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 33 appearances, helping Leipzig return to the Champions League. His playing style thrives on dribbling, raw speed, power and precision in the final third which already makes him one of the most unpredictable wingers in Europe, with clubs like Liverpool and PSG showing keen interest, and his market value estimated at around 90 million euros.By racking up successful take-ons against seasoned defenders like Piero Hincapié and Antonio Rüdiger, Diomande has shown that his 1v1 ability is no fluke. ESPN analyst Gabriele Marcotti summed him up perfectly: "His decision-making went far beyond his teenage years and there is an unselfishness and team ethos to his movements. Athleticism and tricky feet may have put him on the map, but his vision and composure are keeping him there.
