Amid a broader surge of unrest and violent protests sweeping Bangladesh, a Hindu family’s home in the Raozan Upazila of Chattogram was deliberately set ablaze late on Tuesday, destroying household property and killing the family’s pets, police and local residents said.

India Today reported that all family members escaped by cutting through a fence before the blaze consumed the single-storey house. A handwritten threatening banner found near the charred remains warned members of the minority Hindu community to cease all activities or face further consequences, escalating fears among minority communities already shaken by recent violence.

The threatening message, written in Bengali, accused Hindus of actions “against Islam and the Muslim community" and declared that homes, property and businesses of non-Muslims “will not be spared" if the purported activities continued, the report said.

It added that if Hindu community members fail to comply with the directions, their homes, properties and businesses will not be spared and “no one will be able to protect you". “This is the final warning. Any resistance will result in serious action," the banner added.

The incident comes as Bangladesh grapples with weeks of protests and clashes that have drawn regional and international attention. The unrest intensified after the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a young Hindu garment factory worker beaten and burned to death by a mob in Mymensingh following unverified allegations of blasphemy—a killing that has since triggered solidarity protests in India and calls for protection of minorities.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday, voicing anger at Dhaka’s handling of the violence and demanding safety guarantees for Hindu communities in the neighbouring country.

The unrest further followed the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, whose shooting and subsequent funeral drew large protests and clashes with police in recent days, though the focus of demonstrations has broadened beyond singular incidents to encompass wider discontent and law-and-order concerns.

Bangladesh authorities have faced criticism from minority rights advocates and international observers over the handling of such attacks, with critics saying religious tensions and mob violence reflect deeper social fractures. Dhaka’s leadership has described some narratives of targeted communal attacks as misleading, even as tensions and protests continue.
