A major road accident brought traffic to a standstill on Patna’s iconic Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan Bridge, also known as JP Setu, on Wednesday after a head-on collision between a car and a pickup van triggered a massive fire and a 10-kilometre-long traffic jam. The incident that occurred on the Digha-Sonpur stretch connecting Patna to Hajipur, a route that sees heavy vehicular movement throughout the day.

Eyewitnesses described the crash as a high-speed collision so violent that both vehicles burst into flames almost instantly. The driver of one of the vehicles managed to escape with his life, but both the car and the van were reduced to charred metal within minutes. The intensity of the fire left bystanders helpless, unable to intervene before emergency services arrived.

Fire brigade teams reached the spot soon after being alerted and battled the flames for an extended period before finally bringing the blaze under control. However, by the time the fire was extinguished, the vehicles were completely gutted.

The crash brought traffic to a grinding halt on both sides of the bridge, one of the busiest corridors connecting North and South Bihar. Stranded commuters reported being stuck for several hours, with tempers running high amid the heat and chaos. The jam stretched for over 10 kilometres, severely disrupting movement between Patna and Hajipur.

Local police and administrative officials rushed to the location to manage the situation. Personnel were deployed to redirect vehicles and gradually ease the congestion. The police have launched an investigation into the incident and, in preliminary findings, cited over-speeding and possible negligence as likely causes.

Authorities have since renewed appeals for motorists to adhere to traffic rules and maintain safe driving speeds, especially on high-risk routes like the JP Setu. The accident has once again raised urgent questions over traffic regulation, speed monitoring, and emergency preparedness on the bridge, which has seen a series of similar incidents in recent years.
