The fisherfolk are planning to venture into the swelled Godavari river between Dowleswaram and Yanam Union Territory in search of ‘Hilsa Hilsa‘ fish (known as Pulasa in the Godavari region) that breeds in the river during the monsoon. The floodwater attracts the fish species from the sea. The fish is sold through an open auction, mostly at Yanam and Dowleswaram where it fetches an attractive price.
Meanwhile, inflow into the Godavari began to recede downstream Bhadrachalam by Sunday (July 13), bringing much relief to tribal habitations along the Sabari river. Road connectivity, which was cut-off between Chintoor and V.R. Puram, has been restored in Chintoor agency in Alluri Sitarama Raju district.
At Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage, downstream Polavaram Irrigation Project, flood water is being released into the sea at over six lakh cusec while water at 14,200 cusec is being diverted to the Godavari Delta.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar told The Hindu that the inflow began to recede below the first flood warning at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram. Except the marooning of three islands at P. Gannavaram, there was no flood impact on Sunday”. The first flood warning is issued at 10 lakh cusec of inflow at Dowleswaram.
