Five trekkers from Mumbai rescued in 3 separate operations

The most challenging rescue involved 23-year-old Andheri resident Swarup Shinde, who slipped about 30 feet down a slope near Gorakhgad fort in Murbad while trekking with a group of over 20 people.

Navi Mumbai: Five Mumbai residents, including three trekkers and a couple, were rescued in three separate operations across Raigad and Thane districts on Sunday. The most challenging rescue involved 23-year-old Andheri resident Swarup Shinde, who slipped about 30 feet down a slope near Gorakhgad fort in Murbad while trekking with a group of over 20 people.According to rescuers, Shinde narrowly escaped plunging nearly 600 feet into a valley after managing to hold onto a surface. He sustained serious injuries to his head, face and waist. Volunteers from the Sahyagiri rescue team carried him to safety using improvised means and shifted him to hospitals in Murbad before he was admitted to a private hospital in Kalyan. Murbad tahsildar Abhijit Deshmukh said Shinde is stable after surgery.In Uran, a Mumbai-based couple stranded on an island near Pirwadi beach during high tide was rescued by local lifeguards after an hour-long operation.Meanwhile, engineering students Aaryan Shivlani and Nilesh Bhatia from Chembur were rescued near waterfalls in Khopoli after losing their way during a trek. Volunteers provided them food and water before they returned to Mumbai.
