Ferrari confrimed they will debut its radical ‘Macarena’ flip-flop wing in Shanghai FP1 -- aiming to reduce drag and the gap to Mercedes.

Scuderia fans, buckle up — it’s a brand-new race weekend, and Ferrari have brought a rather unusual surprise to the grid.

The Maranello outfit have confirmed they will run their radical ‘flip-flop’ or ‘Macarena’ rear wing during FP1 at the Shanghai International Circuit.

This will mark the first time the design will appear on track since pre-season testing in Bahrain — where Ferrari stunned the paddock with an aggressive interpretation of  F1’s new active aero regulations.

While most teams simply flatten the upper rear wing element to reduce drag on the straights, Ferrari’s SF-26, driven by Lewis Hamilton, appeared to take things several steps further.

Instead of rotating to a slightly flatter angle, the upper rear wing element flips dramatically — almost 180 degrees — into an inverted position when the car switches into “straight mode".

It’s a bold design that instantly turned heads in testing. Now, Shanghai will provide the first proper race-weekend glimpse of how it performs under competitive conditions.

What Makes It Different?

The innovation stems from Formula 1’s sweeping 2026 regulations, which replaced traditional DRS with a fully integrated Active Aero system. Teams can now dynamically adjust both front and rear wing elements to balance drag and downforce.

Ferrari’s interpretation pushes those boundaries.

  • In normal mode, the upper rear wing element works like a conventional wing, producing downforce through the corners.
  • But in straight mode, instead of flattening like rival designs, the element rotates fully upside down.

The result? The wing could help reduce drag and potentially even create a small amount of lift, helping the car accelerate faster down long straights.

Crucially, the regulations reportedly do not restrict how far the element can rotate backwards, leaving Ferrari free to explore the deep end of the aerodynamic rulebook so far.

Ferrari Chasing Mercedes

Ferrari are hoping innovations like the ‘Macarena wing’ will help them close the gap to Mercedes, who dominated the season opener at Albert Park.

Lewis Hamilton finished fourth in Australia behind teammate Charles Leclerc, while George Russell and Kimi Antonelli secured a one-two for the Silver Arrows.

With Shanghai offering very different track characteristics, Ferrari are optimistic that fresh upgrades could help them take a step forward.
