Flood alert issued for people living on banks of Bhavani river

ERODE: Water resources department (WRD) on Tuesday issued a flood alert for people living on the banks of the Bhavani river in Erode district after the water level increased in the Bhavanisagar dam.

Also, the WRD advised tourists to avoid visiting Kodiveri dam near Gobichettipalayam until further notice. The water level at Bhavanisagar dam has increased to 102 feet due to heavy rainfall in its catchment areas. The dam’s full capacity is 105 feet. The WRD, in collaboration with the revenue department, issued a flood alert for people in villages like Periyakodiveri, Mevani and Puliyampatti in the district. A WRD official said 9,300 cubic feet of water was flowing into the Bhavani river, which included 1,000 cubic feet entering the lower Bhavani canal from the Bhavanisagar dam. "While the excess water from Bhavanisagar dam has been fully released into the Bhavani river, there remains a risk of additional flooding, prompting us to issue these flood warnings," the official said.
