Citizens of New York City, don’t fret — football fans heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in New York will have a free way to soak in the action.
City officials confirmed that all five boroughs will host no-cost fan zones, offering live screenings, food, and cultural events throughout the tournament.

New York is one of several host cities for the World Cup, which will be staged across the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11. Matches in the region will be played at MetLife Stadium, including the final.
The announcement comes days after backlash over steep travel costs. Round-trip train fares to the stadium via New Jersey Transit are expected to hit $150, far above the usual $12.90, prompting concern about accessibility for local fans.
Zohran’s Statement
Zohran Mamdani said the city wanted to ensure the tournament remains inclusive.
“These events were not initially set to be free, but the world’s game should belong to the world," he said. “So we made the decision together for fans to be able to watch together without having to spend a dollar."
Each borough will host a designated fan zone. In Manhattan, matches will be screened at Rockefeller Center, a site better known for its winter skating rink and Christmas tree.
Stifling Tickets Costs Still An Issue
Transport costs remain a sticking point. Officials say running the expanded rail service to the 78,000-seat MetLife Stadium will cost close to $50 million, especially with parking restrictions forcing greater reliance on trains. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has urged FIFA to help cover those expenses, though the governing body has resisted, stating its revenues, projected at around $11 billion, are allocated toward global football development and competitions.
Despite the tensions, most host cities across the U.S. are planning free fan zones, with Los Angeles a notable exception.
