Former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has been named as an accused in a hit-and-run case, Guntur Range IGP Sarvashresta Tripati and Guntur SP S. Satish Kumar announced at a press conference here on Sunday.
The incident occurred during Mr. Reddy’s tour programme on June 18, for which police had permitted only the former CM’s convoy and three cars to travel from Tadepalli to Sattenapalli.
When the convoy reached near the Anjaneya Swamy statue on the Etukuru bypass, under Nallapadu Police Station limits near Guntur city, the police received information about a road accident, they said. A man, identified as Cheeli Singaiah, was found with severe bleeding injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead, the police said.
Based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s wife, Cheeli Lurdhu Mary, a case was initially registered under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). On reviewing CCTV camera and drone footage as well as eyewitness accounts, the investigators confirmed that the victim came under the wheels of the former CM’s vehicle. The case was then reclassified under Sections 105 and 49 of the BNS.
Six individuals — Mr. Jagan, his driver Ramana Reddy, and former Ministers Perni Venkataramaiah and Vidadala Rajini, former MP Y.V. Subba Reddy and Mr. Jagan’s PA K. Nageswar Reddy — have been named as accused. Legal proceedings are under way, the police added.
