Former world champion Ricky Hatton, 46, was found hanged at his Greater Manchester home, a coroner’s court heard on Thursday as an inquest into his death was opened and adjourned.

The retired fighter, nicknamed the “Hitman", was discovered unresponsive on September 14 by his manager, Paul Speak, who had come to take Hatton to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai, the court was told.

Police coroner’s officer Alison Catlow detailed the discovery, noting that Hatton had last been seen by his family on September 12, appearing “well." However, he failed to attend an event the following day.

Coroner Alison Mutch confirmed that the provisional cause of death is hanging. The inquest has been adjourned until March 20, 2026.

Hatton, a former light-welterweight and welterweight world champion, was beloved in the boxing world for his larger-than-life personality.

Thousands lined the streets of Manchester for his funeral, which was attended by celebrities including Liam Gallagher, Wayne Rooney, and Tyson Fury.

The fighter had been open about his mental health struggles post-retirement. In a 2016 BBC interview, he discussed battles with drinking and drugs and admitted to multiple suicide attempts.

Despite retiring after a brief comeback in 2012, Hatton returned for a no-scoring exhibition in 2022 against Mexico’s Marco Antonio Barrera and had announced plans to fight professionally in Dubai this December.
