Former Odisha Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik was admitted to a city-based hospital after he complained of uneasiness on Sunday (August 17, 2025).
State Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling, who visited the hospital, said Mr. Patnaik was stable, but under observation. The five-time Chief Minister had recovered after having undergone spine surgery in a Mumbai hospital in June this year.
The Biju Janta Dal said the former Chief Minister was receiving treatment for dehydration and his condition was improving fast. “With the grace of Lord Jagannath, he will soon be discharged from hospital,” said the BJD.
The 78-year-old BJD president could not travel much in the run-up to the 2024 election reportedly due to his health condition. V. K. Pandian, his trusted aide, had then taken over the campaign for the BJD, which was widely believed to be one of the major factors that caused the party’s loss. Odisha government sources said the health condition of Mr. Patnaik was closely being monitored.
