Frenkie de Jong has pledged his long-term future to FC Barcelona, signing a new contract running until 2029, the club confirmed on Wednesday through an official post on social media.
The deal extends his stay at Camp Nou well into the next decade and marks a major show of faith in the Dutch midfielder, who has been a cornerstone of Barça’s midfield since his arrival.
From Ajax Prodigy to Barça Mainstay
The 28-year-old Netherlands international joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 for a reported €75 million, arriving with a reputation as one of Europe’s most technically gifted young midfielders.
Now in his seventh season at the club, De Jong has become one of Barça’s most experienced figures, amassing over 250 appearances across all competitions.
During his time in Catalonia, he has helped Barcelona secure two La Liga titles (2021 and 2023) and two Copa del Rey trophies, serving as both a defensive anchor and a creative outlet through midfield transitions.
Although De Jong endured periods of inconsistent form in previous seasons — often due to injuries and tactical shifts — his influence grew significantly under Hansi Flick last year, forming a dynamic partnership with Pedri González that restored balance and control to Barça’s midfield.
Loyalty and Financial Sacrifice
De Jong’s commitment comes at a crucial time for Barcelona, who continue to manage financial constraints under La Liga’s strict spending regulations.
Spanish media outlets report that the midfielder has agreed to a gradual salary reduction, which will take effect from the 2026–27 season, to help the club maintain squad stability while staying within wage limits.
Originally signed during Josep Maria Bartomeu’s presidency, De Jong was among the highest earners at the club — a contract structure that became a point of contention during the 2022 summer transfer window, when reports suggested Barça considered selling him to alleviate wage pressure.
However, the player stood firm, repeatedly expressing his desire to stay and succeed at Barcelona.
