Brook Lopez grew up in Southern California. He remembers the days when the Los Angeles Clippers were awful.

Now, he’s returning home—betting on a franchise that has transformed itself from perennial punchline to legitimate contender.

Lopez signed a two-year deal worth nearly $18 million with the Clippers and spoke Monday at NBA Summer League in Las Vegas about his decision, praising the team’s remarkable growth and future potential.

“It’s crazy to see, but it’s very cool," Lopez said of the Clippers’ rise. “Seeing the climb, the ascent—I’m a Cali boy. I grew up in the Valley in North Hollywood. Obviously, things were very different back then. And to see where the Clippers have come now, it’s just astonishing. It’s beautiful. I’m glad to be a part of it. And hopefully, I can help take them even further up."

Lopez, born in 1988, watched as the Clippers had the NBA’s worst overall record across the first 25 years of his life. Since then, the tide has turned dramatically.

Over the past 12 seasons, only the Golden State Warriors have won more games than the Clippers, who have now posted 14 consecutive winning seasons—the longest active streak in the league.

Adding to the familiarity for Lopez, the Clippers’ front office is headed by Lawrence Frank—his first head coach in the NBA with the then-New Jersey Nets.

“Definitely a full-circle moment," Lopez reflected.

The 37-year-old center returns to Los Angeles after a productive seven-year run with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he won an NBA title and solidified his reputation as one of the league’s most dependable rim protectors.

Lopez averaged 13 points and 2.1 blocks per game during his time with the Bucks and holds career averages of 15.9 points across 17 NBA seasons. He also played a season with the Lakers in 2017–18.
