Prabhas's reign over the North American box office could be in jeopardy with the arrival of 'The Raja Saab'. While his past hits have shattered records, the advance ticket sales for this horror-comedy show a notable dip. Industry insiders are wary of its sluggish momentum, particularly given the hefty break-even mark, igniting concerns over its financial viability.
Post the historic success of the Baahubali franchise, Prabhas has enjoyed an unparalleled reign at the North American box office among Indian stars. With four films occupying spots in the Top 15 all-time Indian grossers in the circuit , his pull in the overseas market particularly the USA has been virtually unquestioned.
However, his upcoming release The Raja Saab appears to be facing a rare and worrying slowdown, even after the release of its theatrical trailer.Directed by Maruthi, The Raja Saab is positioned as a horror-comedy, a sharp departure from the larger-than-life, action-heavy spectacles that have defined Prabhas’s post-Baahubali stardom. As per the latest data the film’s USA premiere advance sales stand around USD 300K, from 344 locations and over 100 shows and having sold nearly 11,000 tickets .
The total North American( USA + Canada) premiere advances are approximately $315K, with just 8 days left for premieres.
While these numbers are not disastrous for a mid-scale release, they are significantly underwhelming by Prabhas’s standards. What raises alarm bells within the trade is the lack of expected growth trajectory. Historically, Prabhas’s films like Salaar: Part 1 -Ceasefire and Kalki 2898 AD followed a vastly different curve.
With advance bookings opening a month prior similar to The Raja Saab both films had already crossed the $1 million mark in premiere advances with less than two weeks to go. In stark contrast, The Raja Saab struggled to even cross $200K as of December 27, and now even after the trailer launch, the film has added only limited incremental growth since then. The situation becomes more concerning when viewed against its financial expectations.
Distributors in the North American circuit have reportedly acquired the film at a high valuation, with the break-even figure estimated at around $10 million. Given the current pace, the gap between advances and the required final gross appears steep.Adding further perspective is the comparison with Jan Nayagan, Thalapathy Vijay’s final film directed by H Vinoth, which is releasing on the same day January 9, Pongal. Despite opening advance bookings only about 15 days ago, Jan Nayagan has already collected over USD 260K in the USA alone and its total North America collection stands at USD 350K.With limited time left before premieres, The Raja Saab will need an aggressive surge in on-ground promotions and word-of-mouth traction to alter its current course.
