Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso put all the chatter around the tense situation at the Capital City club to rest following their 2-1 win over arch-rivals Barcelona as star forward Vinicius Junior seemed visibly frustrated with his withdrawal during the El Clasico.
However, Alonso seems to have let the Brazilian off the hook following his heartfelt plea following the incident.
“On Wednesday we had a meeting with all the players and Vinicius was very good, impeccable," Alonso said.
“He spoke from the heart, with sincerity, and for me that matter is settled," he added.
Earlier reports suggested that the arrival of new coach Xabi Alonso has unsettled some players in the Real Madrid lineup due to changes in training methods and decorum at the club.
Alonso, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti, has taken a more hands-on and strict approach compared to the Italian gaffer, much to the dismay of multiple players in the squad.
One of the initial changes Alonso implemented was an emphasis on the need for everyone to run harder and work harder when the opposition had possession, without which no one would be guaranteed a place.
Sources state that several players were upset to find they now had little freedom to express their qualities on the pitch, contrasting Alonso’s more demanding and rigid approach with how things were under Ancelotti.
Another report claimed that Madrid players feel Alonso seemed rather distant and unapproachable compared to the popular Ancelotti.
The Brazilian forward, who was substituted by head coach Xabi Alonso with 20 minutes remaining in Madrid’s 2-1 victory, did not take the decision well. Cameras captured him visibly stunned, repeatedly asking, “Me? Me? Gaffer, gaffer! Me?" as he walked off the pitch.
Moments later, a more frustrated Vini stormed down the tunnel, shouting, “It’s always me. I’m leaving the team. I’m leaving, I’d better leave."
He eventually calmed down and returned to the bench for the closing minutes, but the damage was already done. Two days later, Vinicius, who has netted 111 goals in 316 games since his arrival at RMFC took to X to issue an apology.
