Top seeds G Sathiyan and Diya Chitale asserted their dominance, winning the men’s and women’s singles titles at the UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships in New Delhi on Thursday.

Their victories not only bolstered their standing on the domestic circuit but also highlighted the disparity in class and experience between the seasoned stars and the aspiring contenders.

In the men’s final, former national champion Sathiyan displayed his characteristic mix of experience and resilience. The multiple international medallist surged to a 2-0 lead against Ankur Bhattacharjee, although he allowed the youngster to clinch the extended third game after holding a game point.

Unperturbed, Sathiyan cleverly adjusted his tactics, preventing Ankur from engaging in the fast-paced rallies he prefers and varying his strategies to keep him off balance. This shift enabled him to regain control and take a 3-1 lead.

Ankur, however, did not give up easily. The Bengal paddler gained a slight advantage in the fifth game, extending it to 9-6 and threatening to prolong the contest. But Sathiyan’s sharp serves close to the net and precise finishes at crucial moments swung the match back in his favour.

Securing the match 4-1, he claimed his first title of the season, providing a timely confidence boost before heading to Turkey tonight for the upcoming WTT event.

Top seed and defending national champion Diya Chitale rediscovered her champion’s form, capturing the title with a commanding 4-0 victory over former national champion Sutirtha Mukherjee in the final.

Fully fit after overcoming early-season injuries, the RBI paddler combined composure and consistency to keep Sutirtha, representing RSPB, under constant pressure. Although the third seed managed to challenge Diya in a couple of games, she never looked capable of stopping her opponent’s momentum.
