India’s vision of a $5 trillion economy can be realised through strong infrastructure and by creating Smart Villages alongside Smart Cities, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said, addressing the Lokmat Global Economic Convention in London recently.

Gadkari, who addressed the convention virtually, said that with 65% of India’s population in rural areas, better facilities in villages can curb migration, enhance irrigation, boost spending capacity and generate jobs.

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, who also joined the convention virtually, said that “in his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a clarion call to fast-track India’s journey to becoming a developed nation by 2047”.

“This is the perfect time for India — if we miss this opportunity, it may not come again,” he said. “We are all committed to fulfilling Prime Minister Modi’s vision within the next 100 days.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the country is progressing rapidly under the PM’s leadership. “We envision not just a $5 trillion but a $10 trillion economy. Maharashtra has already crossed the $500 billion mark and is heading towards $1 trillion. Our state’s growth is accelerating — no one can stop us”, he said, addressing the convention virtually.

The event saw experts from various fields deliberate on India’s growth and ways to strengthen its economy. Discussions ranged from overcoming difficulties caused by US tariffs to identifying sectors where India could capitalise on new opportunities.

Addressing global trade uncertainties and challenges posed by the US tariffs, Chairman of Lokmat Media Group and former Rajya Sabha MP Dr Vijay Darda said, “India has always turned crises into opportunities. Some may try to slow us down, but no one can stop India’s development journey.” The sessions were moderated by Editor-in-Chief of Lokmat Media Group Rajendra Darda, Joint Managing Director and Editorial Director Rishi Darda, MLA Devyani Pharande, and Managing Director of Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation Brijesh Dixit.
