A 75-year-old woman and her middle-aged son were brutally attacked allegedly by a gang for objecting illegal sand mining on a dry riverbed of Kaanaru, a tributary of Palar river, at Ilayanagaram village near Vaniyambadi town in Tirupattur.

Police said the injured persons were identified as K. Pappammal (75) and her younger son K. Jayavel (43). They were farmers and were living in a small house built in the farmland. Initial inquiry revealed that Pappammal and her two sons including her elder son K. Srinivasan (45) and their families were involved in farming in the village for many years. The three-acre farmland is located near the bund of Kaanaru river.

In recent weeks, Pappammal noticed illegal sand mining by a gang from a portion of the riverbed round the clock. Along with her family, Pappammal objected to it to the gang as such illegal sand mining has resulted in inundation of the village including her farmland during monsoon. She also raised the issue with local panchayat officials and police.

On Monday, when a group of illegal sand smugglers were mining sand in the riverbed, Pappammal and her family objected to again. Angered by her objection, the gang attacked her and her son. Residents rushed to the spot and rescued the injured persons.

Pappammal and her son were admitted at Government Taluk Hospital in Vaniyambadi town. Sensing that the aged woman and her son were admitted at the hospital, the gang barged into the hospital and hit them before Vaniyambadi Taluk police intervened. The gang also allegedly damaged windows and other government property in the hospital.

Based on a complaint by Srinivasan, Pappammal’s son, a case was registered against the gang, who are absconding. Special teams have been formed to nab them.
