In a bleak reminder of last August’s rape-murder at RG Kar Medical College, a first-year student of a law college in south Kolkata was allegedly raped on the premises by an alumnus and two senior students of the institute, a police officer said on Friday. All three accused have been arrested.
Main accused Monojit Mishra, 31, a former student and current Organising Secretary of the South Kolkata district of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), was produced before the Alipore court on Friday, along with the other two accused, and was sent to police custody till July 1.
The other two accused have been identified as Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20, both third-semester students of the college.

‘I TOUCHED HIS FEET’: WHAT HAPPENED ON WEDNESDAY
The 24-year-old woman reached the college around noon on Wednesday to complete formalities related to her examinations.
According to her complaint, she first waited inside the college union room. Subsequently, Mishra allegedly ordered the campus gate to be locked. In the evening, he expressed romantic interest and made unwanted advances, which she rejected. She alleged that he then forced himself on her.
“I denied and fought back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But he did not listen," she told the police.
Mishra allegedly threatened to harm her boyfriend and falsely implicate her parents in criminal cases before confining her within the college premises. She alleged in her complaint that he hit her with a hockey stick. During the incident, she experienced breathing difficulties and asked for an inhaler. After using it, she was taken to the security guard’s room on the ground floor, next to the students’ union office, where the assault allegedly continued.
“I touched his feet but he didn’t let me go …," she told the police in the complaint, adding that while Mishra was allegedly raping her, the other two stood by and watched.
“She was raped by the accused till around 10 pm. We have sealed the room, and our forensic experts will collect evidence," a police officer told PTI.
“She has alleged that the three accused had kept the mobile footage of the assault and threatened to release it on the internet if she spoke about the incident," he said.
The mobile phone devices of the three accused have been seized and sent for forensic tests, the officer added. “We are trying to find out whether the video footage was forwarded to other numbers or not," he said, adding that the mandatory medical tests on the victim were being conducted.
THE PRIME ACCUSED IS A CRIMINAL LAWYER
Mishra graduated from the South Calcutta Law College in 2022. Even after passing out of the institute, he reportedly maintained considerable influence on campus. After graduation, he began practising at the Alipore Police and Sessions Court. During his student years, Mishra was known for his strong-arm tactics and had been linked to multiple incidents of assault. College Vice Principal Noyna Chatterjee stated that the main accused was engaged as a temporary non-teaching staff at the institution for a renewable contractual period of 45 days.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell chief Amit Malviya slammed the TMC, highlighting Mishra’s links with the party. “Outrageous! Manojit Mishra, one of the prime accused in the brutal gang-rape of a college student in Kasba has direct links with the most powerful in the TMC," he said in a post on X.
He further shared Mishra’s images with senior party leaders, including MP Abhishek Banerjee, State Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya and Councillor Kajari Banerjee.
Social media profiles of the prime accused claimed that he is a former president of the college’s Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad unit.
SHAME!In the horrific gang rape case of a college student in Kasba, involving a TMCP leader and his associates, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee has crossed all limits of shamelessness.
When asked about women’s safety, he dismissed it as a mere “political agenda."

TMC VS BJP: POLITICAL BLAME GAME
The TMC has denied any current connection with the accused and pitched for “most severe punishment" if the accused were found guilty.
The BJP, however, countered, saying that under CM Mamata Banerjee’s rule, West Bengal had become a breeding ground for crimes against women.
“Rapes have become a daily horror, and the state machinery continues to fail its daughters. Enough is enough. BJP will not stay silent. We will fight tooth and nail to end this rape culture that has flourished under TMC’s rule," the party said.
Malviya said on X: “The horror of RG Kar hasn’t faded, and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal. Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women. Rape has turned into a routine tragedy…The BJP stands with the victim and her family. We are determined to end this culture of impunity. We will not rest until every culprit is punished."
The TMC in a post on X said:""We stand firmly with the survivor and her family in their fight for justice. The Aparajita Bill, unanimously passed by our Assembly, mandates strict punishment, including the death penalty, for crimes against women…A woman’s body must not be the battleground for your politics. Approve the Bill, let justice prevail."

ACTION TAKEN
Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the National Women’s Commission asked the Kolkata Police to file a detailed action taken report within three days.
Workers of the Congress and the AIDSO held protests before the Kasba Police Station during the day before they were forcefully removed by police.
TMCP president Trinankur Bhattacharya said Mishra had never been the organisation’s unit president at the institution as the students’ body has been defunct for the past few years.
THE RG KAR CASE
The Kasba rape happened less than a year after a post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 8 and 9, 2024, sending shockwaves throughout the nation and sparking widespread protests from the medical fraternity.
The body of the trainee was found in a seminar hall at the hospital in the early hours of August 9, 2024. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested the following day in connection with the crime and was later sentenced to life imprisonment.
