A woman sub-inspector died in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad on Monday after she was mowed down by a car as she fell from her two-wheeler trying to save a stray dog.

According to the details, the incident happened at nearly 2 pm when the deceased, identified as 25-year-old Richa Sachan, was returning home from the Kavi Nagar Police Station after her duty.

Additional Commissioner of Police, Kavi Nagar, Bhaskar Verma, told news agency PTI that the motorcycle hit a stray dog, due to which she lost her balance and fell on the road.

A car coming from behind ran over her, and despite wearing a helmet, she was severely injured, he said.

Upon receiving information, a police team reached the spot and rushed her to Sarvodaya Hospital, where doctors declared her dead, he said.

Richa hailed from Kanpur and was recruited as a sub-inspector in 2023.

She was looking after the charge of the Shastri Nagar outpost and was preparing for the UPSC exams.

PTI quoted her parents as saying that they were planning her wedding for next year.

A guard of honour was given to the sub-inspector at the police lines in Ghaziabad, and her post-mortem was also conducted.

Meanwhile, the national capital is witnessing protests by dog lovers against the Supreme Court’s ruling to relocate stray dogs to municipal shelters.

Multiple activists on Tuesday held a prayer meet at 12 am at Hanuman Mandir and Bangla Sahib in Connaught Place, where nearly 200 people participated to seek divine intervention in their fight to protect street dogs.

Carrying banners with the slogan “Awara nahi, humara hai" (They are not stray, they are ours), they also recited the Hanuman Chalisa before marching to Bangla Sahib to continue their prayers.
