Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) urged people not to dump their old mattress or furniture in nalas or on streets, and instead opt for responsible recycling. It released a QR code for people to book ’free’ doorstep service to pickup such furniture and bedding.

“Scan the QR code to book your FREE doorstep pickup today and ensure your old mattresses and furniture are recycled responsibly,” it stated in a post on X on Sunday (July 5, 2026).

Scanning the QR code directed people to a webpage where they could choose a range of things including mattress and furniture.

The process

Detailing the process, the web page stated that after selecting an option, people have to share their location so that service availability in the area can be confirmed. Thereafter, people were asked to add details including quantity, photos and contact number.

During desilting works taken up in this and previous monsoons, sanitation teams have recovered garbage including discarded wires, mattresses, chairs and other furniture. The accumulated garbage clogged drains, which led to overflowing sewage water and flooding during heavy rains in the city. Other garbage recovered included discarded plastic water bottles and covers.

The Three Municipal Corporation in the city not having a reliable and continuous system to dispose of heavy household articles was mentioned in a report of The Hindu published on June 30.
