Girl students outshine boys at University of Horticultural Sciences convocation

Girl students have performed better than boys at the recent University of Horticultural Sciences convocation in Bagalkot with four girl students winning 37 gold medals between them.

Sahana Patage of Holalu village of Vijayanagar district who comes from humble background won 17 gold medals. She is studying M.Sc in Vegetable Sciences at TNEU College in Coimbatore. She dreams of becoming a scientist and discover new medicine to help farmers fight pests and diseases.

Her father Manjunath Patage is a tailor and has helped his three children take up higher education.

Bhimavva, a resident of Talabaal in Koppal district, has won 16 gold medals. Her father passed away when she was young and her mother brought her up. Her elder brother encouraged her to study further.

“A few years ago, one of my relatives won a gold medal in graduation and it inspired me,” she said.

Amulya H.T. from Chikkamagalur district, who secured four medals in post-graduation, is preparing for competitive examinations.

Dhanyashree S.G. from Erale Valamudi village in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu won four gold medals in her post-graduate degree course. She is currently working in a private company in Bengaluru. She said that she is also preparing for bank exams with the desire to becoming a bank officer.

Pavan Kumar, who comes from an agricultural family in Pitlali in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district, got his doctorate and won four gold medals.

Vandana K. from Bagalkot and Mahalakshmi M. from Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu have won two gold medals each.
