Screengrab From Viral Video Shows Ontario Man Abusing Indian Worker

A shocking video from Oakville, Ontario, has gone viral which captures a young white man hurling racist abuse at an Indian worker inside an eatery.

The clip, shared on X, shows the man shouting, “Go back to your f****** country, you s******-a***** Indian," at the employee.

When confronted by a woman recording the altercation, the man approached her aggressively and repeated his racist slurs. The video, filmed on 26 October, sparked outrage online, though some social media users disturbingly supported the abuser.

Despite the widespread attention, local authorities, the Halton Police have not released any statement or details of possible action in connection with the incident.

Hate crimes in Canada

The Oakville episode is the latest in a string of racist incidents targeting Indian-origin individuals in Canada. Earlier this month, Hardeep Grewal, a member of Ontario’s provincial parliament (MPP), shared his own experience of verbal abuse.

In September, hateful graffiti reading “Indian rats" appeared beside a children’s park in Mississauga, part of the Greater Toronto Area. The incident prompted Peel Regional Police to establish a centralised Hate Crime Unit. One of its first arrests was that of 29-year-old Freda Looker-Rilloraza, accused of painting the slurs.

The surge in xenophobia coincides with economic challenges and growing anti-immigration sentiment in Canada. Once celebrated for its multiculturalism, the country has witnessed an increase in “remigration" rhetoric fuelled by far-right groups.

A recent Leger poll for the Association for Canadian Studies revealed that 60% of Canadians now believe the country does not need any more immigrants, a stark contrast to its long-standing reputation as one of the world’s most welcoming nations.
