The ruling BJP in Goa has set itself a target of winning at least 30 of the state's 40 Assembly seats in next year's elections, aiming to return to power for a fourth straight term.

The target was announced after the party's state executive committee meeting, days after the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena said it would also contest the Goa polls. The Shiv Sena and the BJP are allies and currently share power in Maharashtra.

Addressing a press conference in Panaji on Saturday, Goa BJP president Damodar Naik said the party had resolved to fight the upcoming Assembly elections with full strength.

"Our slogan is 'sattais mein tees'," he said, referring to the target of 30 seats in the Assembly elections likely to be held in February-March 2027.

"Our attempt would be to win the maximum seats. The target right now is 30," Naik told reporters. He said the party organisation would be strengthened across all 40 Assembly constituencies in the state.

Asked about the Shiv Sena's decision to contest the elections in Goa despite being part of the NDA, Naik said decisions on such issues would be taken at the appropriate time.

The BJP is currently in power in Goa with the support of 33 MLAs. Of them, 28 belong to the party, while three are independents and two are from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party.

In the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP had won 20 of the 40 seats. Later, eight Congress MLAs joined the party.

Naik said the executive committee meeting was guided by Union ministers L Murugan and Shripad Naik, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and other leaders. During the meeting, a political resolution was adopted to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being the country's longest-serving elected prime minister.

With the 2027 Goa Assembly elections approaching, the BJP has set a 30-seat goal, said it will strengthen its organisation across the state, and indicated that decisions on the Shiv Sena's move will be taken at the appropriate time.
