Panaji: The Goa University retained its spot in the best state public universities category in the 51-100 rank band in the Union education ministry’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, announced on Thursday.
However, in the overall category for all higher education institutes across the country, Goa’s lone university fell out of the 151-200 rank band, in which it featured last year.The Goa University featured in the 101-150 rank band in the overall category at NIRF 2022 and 2023, slipping down in 2024 to the 151-200 slot. Now, it is out of the 200 best list in the general category in NIRF.The scores for 2025 on different parameters have not been released yet.
Only in July, the Goa University was awarded an A+ grade for the first time in its history by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).Institutes entering the NIRF competition are gauged broadly on the parameters of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.In the engineering category, while the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa, retained its spot in the 101-150 rank band in the country, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Goa, also entered this same rank band, even though IIT Goa is operating from its temporary campus and awaiting land for its permanent campus from Goa govt to date since 2016.
Hearteningly, the state-run Goa College of Pharmacy, the oldest pharmacy college in the country, featured at NIRF 2025 in the 100 best pharmacy colleges in the country yet again. It even improved its rank to 89, from 93 last year.Also, in the college category for general stream institutes, Dempo Charities Trust Dhempe College of Arts & Science, Panaji, retained its spot in the 151-200 rank band. Three more Goa colleges featured in the 201-300 rank band: Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts & Science (Autonomous), Margao; Ponda Education Society Shri Ravi S Naik College of Arts and Science, Ponda; and St Xaviers College of Arts Science & Commerce, Mapusa.In the management institute category, Goa Institute of Management, Sanquelim, retained its position as the only Goa institute to make it to the 50 best list across categories. It ranked 43rd in the list of 50 top B-Schools in the country at NIRF 2025. Last year, it ranked 37.
