Floodwaters from the Godavari river have entered into at least 928 houses downstream of the Sir Arthur Cotton barrage at Dowleswaram, affecting above 3,300 people along the banks of the Vasista, a branch of the river Godavari, in Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema district. As on Friday, no casualties were reported.
Nearly 950 families have been affected by Friday night, with the second flood warning still in force at Dowleswaram, where above 13,51 lakh cusecs of floodwater is being released into the Godavari Delta, where the river meets the Bay of Bengal.
Allavaram and Mummudivaram mandals which are on the banks of river Vasista are the worst hit. Agricultural fields, including banana and paddy crops are submerged under floodwater.
In Mummudivaram Mandal alone, seven islands have been cut-off from the mainland. The affected islands include, Gurajala Lanka, Kuna Lanka, Lanka of Thane Lanka, Chintapalli Lanka, Laxmidevi Lanka, Lanka of Gadilanka, Lanka of Gedellanka.
Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar told The Hindu that there were no casualties and officials are engaged in carrying out relief operations.
Meanwhile, in Chintoor agency of Alluri Sitharama Raju district, an estimated 32 villages along the banks of the river Sabari and the Godavari are affected. Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA-Chintoor) Project officer Shubham Nokwal said relief operations are in progress.
