Burglars decamped with 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver objects and cash from a temple at Kilpakkam village near Arakkonam town in Ranipet on Thursday.
Police said that it was around 6 a.m. when a group of residents and priests came to the local Amman temple and found the lock broken. On entering the sanctum sanctorum, they found the gold jewellery on the deity missing. Besides, silver articles were also not found.
As residents went around the temple, they found the lock of the hundi also broken. No cash or coins were found in the damaged hundi. Police said the annual temple festival was conducted a few days ago which was attended by hundreds of devotees from neighbouring villages.
Based on a complaint lodged by temple authorities, a case was registered by the Arakkonam Town police. Special teams have been formed to nab the culprits. Police are also checking the CCTV footage in the area. A probe is under way.
