In a bid to curb the rising number of road traffic fatalities, the city’s traffic police, in collaboration with Google Maps, have launched a new navigation alert system on 129 key city roads. The feature will now display the permitted speed limit and issue real-time warnings when drivers approach high-risk or accident-prone stretches.

Rajesh Mohan (Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic) explained that the objective is to raise driver awareness and reduce risky behaviours such as sudden lane changes and overspeeding. “Many crashes happen because commuters speed on busy stretches," he said, stressing that maintaining lower speeds increases the chance of survival in collisions.

The initiative targets notorious roads, including the Dwarka Expressway, NH‑48, KMP Expressway, and the Golf Course Extension Road, where many accidents were recorded this year. According to police data, in 2024, Gurugram recorded 448 deaths and over 1,000 accidents, making it one of the most accident-prone districts in Haryana.

While the alerts will first roll out on Android devices for these select roads, plans are in motion to expand coverage to more than 200 roads by early next year. Enforcement measures such as ANPR cameras, drones, and digital challans will operate in tandem with the technology.
